Question 1

What do you learn in the Construction & Building Skills program at Apex Technical School?

Accepted Answer

Apex's Construction & Building Skills program covers six course segments: Carpentry Segment 1, Carpentry Segment 2, Electrical Segment, Plumbing Segment, Kitchen and Bath Remodel Segment 1, and Kitchen and Bath Remodel Segment 2. Students gain hands-on, foundational training across carpentry, electrical basics, plumbing, and kitchen and bath remodeling, preparing for entry-level work across multiple construction trades.

Question 2

How long is the Construction & Building Skills program at Apex Technical School?

Accepted Answer

Apex's Construction & Building Skills program is 900 clock hours and can be completed in as little as 7 months. Class schedules are available at the Long Island City, Queens campus, and admissions are rolling throughout the year.

Question 3

Do I need experience to enroll in Apex's Construction & Building Skills program?

Accepted Answer

No. The program is designed for beginners and starts with safe tool use and foundational carpentry skills before progressing through electrical, plumbing, and remodeling segments. Students train in shop classes with a 20:1 student-to-teacher ratio, so no prior construction experience is required.

Question 4

What skills does Apex's Construction & Building Skills program teach?

Accepted Answer

The program provides foundational, hands-on training across four areas of construction: carpentry (framing, walls, ceilings, floors, roofs), electrical basics (including National Electric Code fundamentals), plumbing (math, hand and power tools, blueprint reading), and kitchen and bath remodeling (insulation, wall finishing, electrical boxes, fixtures, and valves). Apex Technical School is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) and licensed by the New York State Education Department.

Question 5

What jobs can I get after completing the Construction & Building Skills program?

Accepted Answer

Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles in new construction, remodeling and renovations, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work across New York City's construction industry. Apex's job placement assistance team works with students and graduates on resumes, interview preparation, and connections to employers hiring in construction trades.

Question 6

How much do construction workers make in New York?

Accepted Answer

Pay varies significantly by trade and specialization: the national median annual wage is $59,310 for carpenters and $46,050 for construction laborers and helpers, according to May 2024 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Entry-level workers typically start below these medians, with pay rising through experience, trade specialization, and additional licensure.

Question 7

Do I need a license to work in construction in New York?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the trade and the work performed. General construction and carpentry labor doesn't require a state license, but electrical and plumbing work in New York, beyond entry-level assisting, typically requires passing a licensing exam and meeting experience requirements as you advance toward journeyman or master status. Apex's program builds the foundational skills across all four trades, preparing graduates for entry-level roles while they pursue further licensure in a specialization if they choose.
